Sexual Harassment

Sexual harassment and inappropriate conduct resulting from sexual harassment constitute a criminal offence.

The University has enacted regulations regarding prevention of sexual harassment, as required by law.  The purpose of the regulations is to ensure that the University can provide a safe working and learning environment, without threat of sexual harassment, nor resulting unfair treatment by supervisory staff.

The University has appointed a Complaints Commissioner who also acts as advisor on the prevention of sexual harassment. If the Commissioner receives a complaint, a preliminary investigation is held.  If legitimate grounds are found for the complaint, a disciplinary procedure follows.

Prohibition of Consensual Intimate Relations between Faculty Members and Students

  1. Even consensual intimate relationships, including sexual relations, whether temporary or ongoing, between a faculty member who has an academic authority over the student, and the student constitutes a conflict of interest which jeopardizes the integrity of the educational process, creates improper study and communal atmosphere, and may lead to abuse of authority.  Therefore, faculty members must refrain from any consensual intimate relations with the student as long as an academic authority exists between them.

  2. If such consensual intimate relations nonetheless arise, the faculty member must immediately terminate all authoritative academic ties with the student or report immediately to his/her superior about the existence of intimate relations between him/her and his/her student, rectifying the situation by changing the supervisor, by transferring an exam or work to be reviewed and evaluated by another teacher, or in any other manner, while ensuring that the student is not harmed.

  3. An "Academic Authority" includes, among others, direct teaching (participation in a course given by the teacher, an exercise, laboratory, supervision in theses); granting scholarships or other benefits; membership in a committee where the student’s matters are considered, and taking part in any action which would affect the student.

Violation of article 1. above, constitutes a disciplinary offense.
