Program Details

At Hebrew University’s Institute of Chemistry, we offer graduate studies in all of chemistry’s traditional subdisciplines - organic, inorganic, analytical, physical, and biochemistry - and in newer fields such as nanoscience and nanotechnology. Our programs are designed to leverage your undergraduate theoretical and practical knowledge through independent academic research under the supervision of an experienced, renowned faculty member. In addition, you’ll broaden your knowledge of chemistry through a tailored curriculum including courses that resonate with your personal research interests.

The Institute of Chemistry offers four MSc tracks of specialization:

Career & Networking

The broad scope of the field of chemistry, coupled with the international reputation of Hebrew University and its Institute of Chemistry, place our graduates in high demand in chemical-related industries, hi-tech, environment, and healthcare, as well as the pharmaceutical industry, government positions, public service, and other professional spheres. Many of our graduates choose to pursue doctoral studies and academic careers, holding faculty positions at leading institutions around the globe.

The Institute of Chemistry and its Faculty

Hebrew University’s Institute of Chemistry is the first to have been established in Israel. The Institute was founded by Andor Fodor, recruited by Prof. Albert Einstein, himself. It has since gained worldwide recognition as a center of chemistry research and academic excellence, boasting multidisciplinary programs that are designed to cultivate the next generation of our world’s leading chemists.

The Institute offers master’s students an opportunity to study and conduct research in state-of-the-art facilities under the mentorship of prestigious faculty, and to be a part of an institution renowned for publishing in top journals, and generating patents and intellectual property in a wide-range of industries.

The Institute of Chemistry is comprised of 34 faculty members and 20 active emeriti professors conducting research across all chemistry disciplines. It is home to more than 250 undergraduates and approximately 200 research students enrolled in our various B.Sc., MSc and Ph.D. programs, as well as 100 postdoctoral researchers who have joined our ranks from across the globe.

Admissions Requirements

In order to be considered for an MS. program, candidates must first identify an available position in one of the Institute’s research groups. This is typically done by directly contacting relevant Principal Investigators who are involved in research that reflects your interests. In addition, applicants must submit proof of:

A bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a closely related subject from a recognized institution of higher learning. (Candidates holding degrees outside of the chemical sciences may be admitted only after formal review and approval by the program Head, and may be required to supplement studies with additional courses).
  • A cumulative GPA of 80 or above. (Candidates with lower GPAs may be admitted only after formal review and approval by the program head).
  • An official transcript of studies from your bachelor’s degree.
  • English language proficiency as detailed in the application guidelines (TOEFL and IELTS are recognized).
  • Applicants who have not yet received their Bachelor’s degree certificate may attach an official transcript that includes the cumulative degree grade point average.

Applications for our MSc programs are completed in two stages:

  1. At the university level: complete application online or by means of a "registration packet."
  2. At the Faculty of Science level: set up an account on the registration system, complete the online form, and provide the necessary supporting documents.
