Professor Haitham Amal

Hebrew University of Jerusalem is proud to announce that Professor Haitham Amal is part of a prestigious $17M grant consortium focused on pioneering autism research. This grant, awarded by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), supports cutting-edge studies to advance the understanding and treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Groundbreaking Discoveries

Professor Amal, a world-renowned expert in nitric oxide and brain disorders, has made groundbreaking discoveries in autism research. His team was the first to identify a direct link between nitric oxide levels in the brain and ASD—an insight that holds profound potential for the diagnosis and treatment of the disorder.

Remarkably, Professor Amal's laboratory is the only research facility outside the United States selected to participate in this global initiative. The international consortium, led by Professor Stuart Lipton from the Scripps Institute in San Diego, is dedicated to uncovering the molecular mechanisms behind ASD.

Global Research Impact

This grant will fuel Professor Amal's ongoing research, specifically exploring how air pollution and environmental factors may contribute to autism. With autism currently affecting one in 30 births in the U.S. and one in 50 in Israel, this research offers hope for new diagnostic tools and innovative treatment options.

Professor Amal’s interdisciplinary approach—integrating OMICS technology, systems biology, and a range of biochemical, pharmacological, and behavioral methods—positions him at the forefront of autism research. His work is poised to make a transformative impact on individuals and families affected by autism worldwide.

Hebrew University is honored to have Professor Amal as part of its esteemed faculty and looks forward to the global impact of this critical research.

In these challenging times, Hebrew University of Jerusalem remains dedicated to our mission of building a better future through education and research. We extend our sincere gratitude to friends and partners worldwide who have shown unwavering solidarity during these difficult times. Together, we will overcome the challenges we face, and our joint pursuit of knowledge remains steadfast.
