List of all master’s degree programs >>
A master's degree (MA, MSc, etc.) is usually completed in two years. A few programs can be completed within one year (3 semesters, including summer semester).
Study Tracks
- Research - in this track students are required to write a thesis.
- Non-Research - the track does not include a thesis but requires additional courses and seminars. Students who complete this track and then decide to pursue a doctoral degree are required to register as supplementary PhD students and write a thesis.
Generally, graduate (Master) studies are based on undergraduate studies in the same field. Differences in curriculum and course content may necessitate supplementary studies.
In some departments, applicants with little or no background may be considered for a supplementary program before being admitted to the master’s degree program. The extent of the supplementary program may vary from a few courses to two full years of studies, depending on the departmental requirements.
Supplementary studies consist of undergraduate (Bachelor) courses taught in Hebrew. Therefore, applicants accepted to supplementary studies need to meet Hebrew proficiency requirements even if the master’s program is taught in English.
Language Flexibility at HUJI
As a new immigrant, you have the option to start your first year in the international BA program, study Hebrew, and switch to Hebrew-taught courses once you meet the language proficiency requirement.
Additionally, at a student's request and with the course teacher's approval, a written assignment may be submitted in a language other than Hebrew.
3. Non-Degree Programs
Mechina (Preparatory Program)
Our one-year Mechina program is designed for high school graduates from abroad, including discharged immigrant soldiers, who wish to pursue undergraduate studies in Hebrew but need additional preparation.
The program includes intensive Hebrew and English courses (those who graduated from an English-speaking secondary school are exempt from English courses.), along with Jewish history and Israel studies; statistics or mathematics; and introductory classes in subjects like psychology, business, international relations, which may be recognized by certain departments in Hebrew University’s faculties of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Science.
You will take one of three tracks of study: Humanities and Social Sciences, Exact and Life Sciences, and Business/Economics.
Learn more about the curriculum.
All courses are taught in basic Hebrew, apart from Jewish history, which is also offered in English, French, and Russian.
Successful completion of the Mechina Program will help you improve your chances of admission to the prestigious Hebrew University, as well as to other institutions of higher education in Israel. Click here to learn more about the minimum requirements for successful completion of the Mechina.
In addition to preparing you for academic study, our Mechina program helps you adjust to life on campus and in Israel. Our multilingual staff of experienced advisors offers personal support throughout the year and will help you transition successfully to living in Israel independently.
Furthermore, a team of specially selected, multilingual Israeli students, called madrichim, reside in the dormitories and will help you become better acquainted with Israeli society and culture.
