    The graduate program in Biochemistry, Food Science and Nutrition provides trainees with the knowledge and experience that are needed for carrying out innovative research projects in topics relating to food production, food security, food safety, sensory perception of food, nutrition-related pathologies, and physiological responses to dietary deficiencies.

Career & Networking 

Our graduates gain valuable experience which allows them to join research and development teams in the food industry, or to continue on to higher levels of academic research. Each trainee is expected to carry out an individual research project, supervised by one of our faculty members, on a topic that is chosen by the student in consultation with his/her supervisor. In addition, each trainee is expected to complete coursework of at least 24 credit points over two academic years, in accordance with the program requirements as outlined in the course catalog, and in consultation with the supervisor.

Teaching Faculty

Our faculty members include established leading scientists who employ a wide variety of cutting-edge interdisciplinary approaches to study these topics. These range from biochemistry, molecular biology and whole organism physiology studies on the one hand, to food engineering and food policy questions at the other end of the spectrum. Our MSc and PhD programs emphasize the development of individual research skills, which are essential for a successful scientific career whether in the industrial sector or in academia.

The long list of world-changing breakthroughs developed by the faculty’s researchers include modern drip irrigation methods, the cherry tomato, returning fragrance to flowers, environmentally safe pesticides, improving pollination by manipulating honeybee behavior, and a slew of other advanced environmentally responsible agricultural techniques, especially under conditions of scarce water. The MSc program in Applied Physics attracts students in pursuit of a path of study that integrates physics research with technological development. Designed to allow students to deepen their scientific knowledge in their field of expertise, the program offers hands-on experience with basic technologies in the chosen field, and provides knowledge in other branches of science and engineering that are relevant to their chosen field of expertise. Our MSc program offers four specialization tracks:

  • Optoelectronics
  • Microelectronics
  • Nanoscience and Nanotechnology
  • Quantum Technologies

Studies combine theoretical courses, both mandatory and elective, with independent research under the mentorship of a renowned faculty member, and include the completion of a research thesis and a final oral exam, as per the degree requirements.

The Department of Applied Physics

Founded in the late 1960’s, the Department of Applied Physics is located on the Edmond J. Safra campus at Givat Ram. Home to a cohort of innovative scientists and engineers, the Department is dedicated to expanding our understanding of natural phenomena and to harnessing this knowledge to advance applied science and technology and, ultimately, improve our lives.

The Applied Physics Department is at the frontier of physics research, engaging in the high-tech fields of nanotechnology, optoelectronics, microelectronics, and quantum technologies. It encompasses 12 research groups and several research centers, including nanofabrication, miniature integrated systems, and nanocharacterization. Since its founding, the Department boasts many hundreds of MSc and PhD graduates. Our long-standing tradition of teaching and research, coupled with our state-of-the-art facilities and the mentorship of our prestigious faculty draws students and researchers from across the globe, many of whom continue on to make significant contributions to society as researchers, educators, and industry leaders.

In order to be considered for our MSc program, all applicants must undergo an admissions interview and submit the following documentation:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Bachelor’s degree in physics or electric engineering from a recognized institution of higher learning.
  • Cumulative GPA of 85 or above.
  • One-page statement of interest and/or summary of previous research experience.
  • Official transcript of study from your bachelor’s degree.
  • 2 academic letters of recommendation.
  • English language proficiency (TOEFL and IELTS are recognized).

In addition, applications for our MSc program are submitted via a two-step process:

  1. At the university level: complete your application online.

The Institute of Chemistry and its Faculty

Hebrew University’s Institute of Chemistry is the first to have been established in Israel. The Institute was founded by Andor Fodor, recruited by Prof. Albert Einstein, himself. It has since gained worldwide recognition as a center of chemistry research and academic excellence, boasting multidisciplinary programs that are designed to cultivate the next generation of our world’s leading chemists.

The Institute offers master’s students an opportunity to study and conduct research in state-of-the-art facilities under the mentorship of prestigious faculty, and to be a part of an institution renowned for publishing in top journals, and generating patents and intellectual property in a wide-range of industries.

The Institute of Chemistry is comprised of 34 faculty members and 20 active emeriti professors conducting research across all chemistry disciplines. It is home to more than 250 undergraduates and approximately 200 research students enrolled in our various B.Sc., MSc and Ph.D. programs, as well as 100 postdoctoral researchers who have joined our ranks from across the globe.

Admissions Requirements

In order to be considered for an MS. program, candidates must first identify an available position in one of the Institute’s research groups. This is typically done by directly contacting relevant Principal Investigators who are involved in research that reflects your interests. In addition, applicants must submit proof of:

A bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a closely related subject from a recognized institution of higher learning. (Candidates holding degrees outside of the chemical sciences may be admitted only after formal review and approval by the program Head, and may be required to supplement studies with additional courses).
  • A cumulative GPA of 80 or above. (Candidates with lower GPAs may be admitted only after formal review and approval by the program head).
  • An official transcript of studies from your bachelor’s degree.
  • English language proficiency as detailed in the application guidelines (TOEFL and IELTS are recognized).
  • Applicants who have not yet received their Bachelor’s degree certificate may attach an official transcript that includes the cumulative degree grade point average.

  1. At the university level: complete application online or by means of a "registration packet."

At Hebrew University’s Racah Institute of Physics, we offer graduate studies across all fields of physics, as well as specialization tracks in Nanoscience and Quantum Technology and Information. Through experiment, observation and analysis of phenomena, our programs are designed to leverage your undergraduate theoretical knowledge through practical research under the supervision of a renowned faculty member, beginning from your second semester of studies. The Jerusalem School of Business Administration and its Faculty

Hebrew University’s Racah Institute of Physics was established in 1970, and is named after Prof. Giulio Racah, one of the founding fathers of physics in Israel. Located on the Edmond J. Safra campus, the institute conducts experimental and theoretical research across a wide range of physics disciplines, including nanophysics, biophysics, nonlinear and condensed matter physics, nuclear and hadronic physics, quantum technologies, optical physics, high energy physics and astrophysics. 

The Racah Institute is home to approximately 60 faculty members, 400 undergraduate students and 170 graduate and doctoral students engaged in research across all fields of physics. The Institute encompasses a wide range of fields of research, and includes two research centers: the Center for Nanoscience and Technology, and the Quantum Information Science Center.
